I was invited to Quebec City by the Centre VU to carry out an in situ work, in collaboration with the citizens of Saint-Roch, a district where an accelerated gentrification was taking place. I then began thinking about this problem through the eyes of Olga and Raúl, an immigrant couple having lived in Canada for a few months. What is the impact of this new context on the couple's inner life?

After having had many intimate conversations (in Spanish) with Olga and Raúl, I wrote a dialogue (in French) based on their love life's difficulties. They then recited this text for the camera, their difficulties in pronunciation creating some tensions. Also, the authenticity of the two protagonists, shot frontally, was put to the test. The videos, retro-projected upon the window of an empty store, then allowed strollers to see the installation by day and by night, blurring the limits between the dwelling and the city, between private and public spaces.

With Habiter, I carried on a previous reflection about the sense of community that may arouse among individuals, and its impacts on society.

The project was presented to the public from 25 August to 1 October 2006.

Sur invitation du Centre VU, j'ai passé quelques mois à Québec afin de réaliser une œuvre in situ, en collaboration avec les résidents de Saint-Roch, un quartier aux prises avec un rapide embourgeoisement. J'ai voulu aborder ce problème à travers les yeux d’Olga et Raúl, un couple d’immigrants habitant le Canada depuis quelques mois. Quel est l'impact de ce nouveau contexte sur la vie intérieure du couple?

Après plusieurs conversations intimes (en espagnol) avec Olga et Raúl, j'ai écrit un dialogue (en français) inspiré des difficultés de leur vie amoureuse. Ils ont alors récité ce texte pour la caméra, leurs difficultés de prononciation provoquant certaines tensions. Aussi, l'authenticité des deux protagonistes, filmés frontalement, a été mise à l'épreuve. La vidéo, présentée en rétroprojection à même les fenêtres d'un espace commercial vacant, a permis aux promeneurs de voir l'installation de jour comme de nuit, brouillant les frontières entre la résidence et la ville, l'espace privé et public.

Avec Habiter, je poursuis une réflexion sur le sentiment de communauté qui s’établit entre les individus et ses effets au sein de la société.

Le projet a été présenté au public du 25 août au 1er octobre 2006.
